Why Do We Do That?

Have you ever wondered why we tap the Wardens on the shoulder to attract their attention when they are sitting there looking straight at us?

Have you ever contemplated the significance of the cable tow?

If you have then you should have been at the talk in Wotton given by the past Provincial Mentor, Richard Reeve, who has been doing a lot of research into the history and reasoning behind our ceremonies. He took us through the part the Inner Guard plays in our ceremonies, what it means and where it comes from. As a group Freemasons pride themselves in preserving the traditions of lodges from over three hundred years ago but knowing what has changed explains many of the more obscure aspects.

Our photographs show Richard Reeve in full flow, Martin Tucker (our current Provincial Mentor who took over from Richard) adding to the explanation, Vince Howell acting as Inner Guard and our Assistant Provincial Grand Master, Ian Davies, taking part in a demonstration of what happens when someone arrives late for the meeting.

If you do wonder about any aspects of our meetings then you will be pleased to hear that Richard Reeve will be holding this explanation of the role of the Inner Guard again and further talks about other roles and aspects of our ceremonies in the near future. If you would like to attend one please contact provcommoff@glosmasons.org.uk
