Freemasonry at Gettysburg

The renowned historian, W Bro John Bassett OBE, was guest speaker at the latest Gloucestershire Masonic Society meeting, held at Tewkesbury Masonic Centre.  ‘Masons at Gettysburg’ tracked the exploits of two army officers, each Freemasons, finding themselves commanding opposing forces.  This fascinating and thought-provoking account invoked much debate amongst the thirty members and guests.  The evening was rounded off with the Tewkesbury caterers’ ‘famous fish ‘n’ chips’!

GMS is flourishing and, following the Tewkesbury evening, topped the 100 membership mark.   Details of the society can be found under Members’ Info on the new Provincial website at https://www.glosmasons.org.uk/.  The next scheduled meeting will be on the afternoon of Thursday 18th January 2024 at Stroud, when W Bro Gordon Phillips will deliver a new presentation entitled ‘Masonic Music’.

The close association of GMS with our neighbouring society was demonstrated a week later by a contingent of Stapleton Lodge of Instruction attending the installation of John Bassett as President of the 126 year-old BMS, where he delivered another thought-provoking lecture entitled, ‘Masonry will have to change if we want Masonry to stay as it is’.
